Description
A delicious and incredibly fast Thai Basil Beef Rolls recipe: thinly sliced flank steak wrapped around tender-crisp peppers and mushrooms, all coated in a savory-sweet hoisin glaze. A perfect 30-minute meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
- Green onions, sliced, for garnish
Instructions
- Season the Steak: Sprinkle salt and black pepper on both sides of the steak slices.
- Cook the Steak: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak slices and sear for 1–2 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- Sauté the Aromatics: In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and minced garlic. Cook until softened and fragrant (about 2–3 minutes).
- Add the Veggies: Stir in the red and green bell peppers and mushrooms. Cook for 3–4 minutes until they’re tender-crisp.
- Make the Sauce: Return the steak to the skillet. Add hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, and sesame oil. Stir everything together and cook for another 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the ingredients.
- Garnish and Assemble: Remove from heat and sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions. Spoon the filling onto each steak slice and roll tightly. Secure with toothpicks if needed.
Notes
- Steak Slicing: Slice the flank steak very thinly, against the grain, before seasoning. This ensures the steak is tender after the quick sear.
- High Heat Searing: Use medium-high heat when searing the beef to create a quick sear without overcooking the thin slices.
- Veggies Crispness: Cook the vegetables until they are tender-crisp, not soft. This preserves their texture and makes the final roll more satisfying.
- Make Ahead: You can slice the vegetables ahead of time. Cook the filling and assemble the rolls just before serving for the best texture.
- Rolling: Place the filling near the edge of the steak slice and roll tightly to ensure the rolls hold their shape when serving.
