Description

A deliciously easy and gourmet Garlic Bread with Shallots: crusty sourdough bread spread with a rich compound butter featuring slow-cooked caramelized shallots, garlic, and fresh herbs. The ultimate side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 large shallot, thinly sliced
  • 8 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 3 large pieces crusty sourdough bread
  • Parmesan cheese, to garnish

Instructions

  • Caramelize the Shallots: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a small pan over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the shallots and cook, stirring often, until caramelized, about 10-12 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Make the Compound Butter: In a bowl, combine the remaining 3 tablespoons butter, minced garlic, thyme, parsley, caramelized shallots, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  • Spread and Bake: Spread the butter mixture generously over the sourdough bread slices. Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes, until the bread is toasted and the flavors have melded.
  • Serve: Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese before serving.

Notes

  • Caramelization: Cook the shallots slowly over low heat to achieve true caramelization without burning, ensuring a deep, sweet flavor.
  • Butter Temperature: Use softened butter (room temperature) when mixing the compound butter. This ensures easy, smooth spreading.
  • Bread Choice: Sourdough is recommended for its sturdy texture and slightly sour flavor, but a baguette or ciabatta also works well.
  • Make Ahead: The compound butter can be made up to a week in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Slice and bake just before serving.
  • Garnish: Using freshly grated Parmesan cheese yields a much sharper flavor and better texture than pre-grated cheese.
