Deliciously Easy Honey Thyme Gruyère Baked in Puff Pastry: A Gourmet Treat

  • Author: New York Recipe
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4-6 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

  • A deliciously easy, show-stopping appetizer featuring a rich, nutty Gruyère cheese filling infused with thyme and honey, all wrapped in flaky, golden puff pastry and baked to perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Bake:

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 pound Gruyère cheese, cut into cubes
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • A generous drizzle of hot honey
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Turbinado sugar, for sprinkling

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  • Assemble the Pastry: Lay the thawed sheet of puff pastry flat on the parchment-lined baking sheet. Pile the cubed Gruyère cheese in the center of the pastry. Sprinkle the minced garlic and dried thyme evenly over the cheese.
  • Drizzle and Fold: Drizzle a generous amount of hot honey directly over the cheese and seasonings for a sweet-savory kick. Fold the four corners of the puff pastry sheet up and over the cheese, gently pinching the dough together to secure it and partially enclose the filling. The cheese will still be visible from the top, which is desired.
  • Finish & Bake: In a small bowl, prepare the egg wash by beating the egg. Brush the entire exposed puff pastry with the beaten egg wash. Sprinkle a generous amount of turbinado sugar over the egg-washed pastry for added texture and a beautiful caramelized shine.
  • Serve: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and beautifully puffed, and the cheese is melted, bubbling, and irresistibly gooey. Remove from the oven and serve immediately. It is ideally served with a fresh salad, or alongside sweet and savory pairings like apple and pear slices.

Notes

  • Puff Pastry Handling: Work with cold puff pastry. If it becomes too warm and sticky, chill it briefly before handling.
  • Cheese Choice: Gruyère is best for its melting properties and nutty flavor, but other cheeses like Comté or even aged cheddar could work.
  • Honey: Use hot honey for an extra kick. If you only have regular honey, you can infuse it with red pepper flakes.
  • Overfilling: Don’t overfill the pastry. The filling should be contained in the center to allow the pastry to bake properly.
  • Serving Fresh: This bake is best served immediately, while the cheese is warm and gooey and the pastry is at its crispiest.
